We (o2e-sports.com) interviewed Luiz "Vecchi" Vecchi, known in the Quake 3 community for his passion for this game and world-wide known by his master piece, Forever2.
In this interview he will tell us how the idea of producing a movie came up, what he thinks about the current quake3 scene, etc. You can read the interview here:
o2e-sports | ceb10n: Well Vecchi, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
r0x*Vecchi: Well, I am a normal person like any other, who likes and enjoys the good things in life: Sports, Films, Culture, Computer science, Food, Games, Women, and my children - obviously ;) I am a typical youngster from the inland. I have never lived in big cities. Currently I live in “Carmo do Rio Claro”, south of “Minas Gerais”. I am 32 years old and I work as a commercial manager in a private company.
How did you start with Quake3?
All my life I've been passionate about electronic games. I played practically all the consoles, where I had the privilege to play thousands of games. The way I got to know Quake3Arena is an uncommon story. Everything started when I was transferred in 1999 (coincidence or not, the year Q3 got released) here to Carmo, to manage a new branch office of the company. Believe it or not, until then I had never seen anyone play a game on a PC. I even didn’t have a PC at home. After living for almost two years in Carmo, on a beautiful day I went down a street here in the center, and I heard some interesting sounds coming out of a computer store. I was curious, as all mining people hehehe... I entered the store, and there I saw a PC game for the first time. The game being played was Quake3Arena. I immediately fell in love with it. I was nailed to the floor for some minutes, watching the owner of the store playing against bots, he said he was testing the game that he had just bought. After a long chat I left, determined to buy my first PC, simply motivated from seeing that game. And from that day, I never stopped playing this game which I consider to be the most perfect MP until this day. Quake 3 is not just one more game. Quake 3 is a religion!
Do you think Quake3 still has a future, do you think it will continue to live on, even without championships, new players, etc? [NOTE: CPL announced only recently that it will once again choose for Q3 as the 1v1 tourney game - this was not known at the time the interview took place]
Quake 3 will never cease to exist! It is true that here in Brasil, it was difficult to gain fans. And this always passed a negative impression in respect to the success and acceptance of this game. I think there are two main reasons for this: the first one is that for the game to be well played, it is necessary to have a good PC with a good video card. In the year of its launching (1999) only a few people in Brasil had the means to buy these :( The second reason, is that Quake 3 is a MP game only, so in order to be successful here in Brasil, it would be necessary to have a good internet connection (even nowadays this is a problem) and much more Lan Houses then the ones that existed in the old days. But, on the other hand, Quake 3 outside of Brasil is still one of the most respected and played games in the world. Foreigners approach this game with extreme professionalism. Quake 3 still is part of many important championships: QuakeCon, Eurocup, Americup, etc. ESWC is also looking into including this game again. Well, as I said above, Quake 3 will never die! But even so, it is necessary that those who love this game, also play a role in spreading and presenting this game to new players.
You always had an attitude “for fun” in Quake, just having a good time comes first place. Would you like to see more championships of this game? Would you be a part of it?
Although I am only playing for fun, I would love to participate in big championships. But this would mean a total devotion to Quake3, including lots of hours of training. Unfortunately with 14 hours of work each day, this is unfeasible to me. On the other hand, we are always having championships here in our city.
When did you get the idea to make a movie?
Look, that was an old dream that was becoming more real to me each day. There is nothing more pleasing then capturing the game that you love so much in a movie. My bigger motivation, without a shadow of a doubt, has been the infinite amount of Quake3 movies that I have seen. Some of these movies are extremely interesting, while others are less so. But the best thing is the challenge of you facing editing tools, that you never heard about before. But in the end though, the result more then compensates any suffering ;)
Forever 2 had great feedback from the community, it has even been mentioned on the site cyberfight.org, did you forsee this success?
I was really surprised with so many great reactions to Forever2 in the community. Besides cyberfight.org, esreality.com also gave special attention to Forever2. Forever2 also was prominent in dozens of other sites around the world. But so much positivity about a movie has a clear name. LOVE TO THE GAME! That is the shirt I dressed when I started Forever2.
How is Forever 3 coming along?
It is coming along. Not as fast as I would like, due to the limited time we can dedicate to the project. Forever3 took such dimensions, that we did not expect. For example, there are almost 500 demos that we received from dozens of players from over 15 countries. Therefore we want Forever3 to be something more than a simple fragmovie, or trickmovie. We WANT Forever3 to capture all the emotion and beauty of this game. Forever3 will contain many unknown surprises and effects, never seen before in other movies. This means putting in the necessary time for research and tests. We from Forever3 Team promise to present all a nice work.
Currently, you are developing the movie with the partnership of Tânia, from Portugal. How did this partnership start?
The partnership with Tânia initially started when I asked her to deal with the international forums (a sort of public relations person). Because my English is relatively weak, I would certainly find many difficulties in communicating with other people. I have known her for a while from the forum of own-age.com, and she accepted in helping me in that task. However only for public relations, because she doesn't have a lot of free time, she is a university student in Portugal. She wanted to use the limited free time for her movie "Proclamation". Tânia too is extremely passionate about Quake3. After a few conversations, I finally told her the script of Forever3. It turned out that, coincidence or not, many ideas we had for our projects were the same. And from there she had no solution but to embrace the Forever3 project, and started to be a part of the production and direction of Forever3.
You have said that you would not make another movie due to the work that it gives, so why did you get involved with the project of Forever3?
Simply because of LOVE to the GAME! And also by thinking that the trilogy Forever, would have to finish in great style with Forever3.
After Forever 3 do you intend to make another movie?
Perhaps. Because after finishing Forever3, I will give editing movies a little rest. After that, certainly because of the love that I feel for this game, I might be able to initiate a new project. Not another Forever, but a new project ;)
Which tip would you give someone who is interested in making a movie, but does not know for where to start?
Someone who wants to edit movies, will find difficulties where to start. I first advise reading some tutorials. I would recommend these 4 excellent tutorials:
On Quality - [ Shaolin Productions ] How you make top movie - [ Tania ] Orxata's Q3 Video Tutorial Making V1.0 - [ Orxata's ] A better understanding of quality and codecs - [ Own-Age ]
I created a simple but sufficient tutorial, a little help to someone who wants to create a movie but does not know where to start.
Edition of Videos - [ Vecchi ] (Brasilian site)
Appreciated for the interview Vecchi, would you like to add something?
Thank you for this interview. I would like to thank rifleman, one of the thinkers of this interview. Thanks to the admins as well, and the members of o2e-sports, for making the Oxygen e-Sports.com a pleasant and extremely professional site. I am also thankful to all the members of Forever3 Team, assistants and collaborators, for dedicating part of their precious time, in the creation of FOREVER3. I also thank all those that have always supported our work.
Very thankful to all and see you next time!
Good luck vecchi;) Thanks!

Added questions:
spookmineer: Compared to Forever2, did you improve some aspects of movie making? If so, which aspects are they?
r0x*Vecchi: Yes, since the moment that Forever3 became a reality, and no more just a dream, I have dedicated a lot on research and testing. A lot of quality tests have been made in VAID forums here in Brasil. I have also frequently visited other forums specialised in the matter. I believe I have become better in many aspects. But at the moment I rather not comment which ones, so I don’t ruin the suprise that will be shown in Forever3.
After Forever2, do you think Forever3 will be even better? I have no doubts that Forever3 will be superior to Forever2. At least that are our intentions. One of the strong subjects of Forever3, is that it will have a solid concept, same goes for Proclamation that is being done by Tânia. The main purpose of Forever3 is, to show the true feeling that Quake 3 Arena gives, to its truthful followers of that game. And for that, Forever3 will have to be exciting from the beginning till the end.
How do you pick music for your movie? Do you look for a certain music style, or look for a certain atmosphere, or maybe search for "easily" synchable music?
For the music selection I don’t use only one of those criteria, I do use all of them. It is necessary that the chosen tracks cause wonderness and emotion in what you are seeing. I consider the audio track as one of the main positive / negative aspect of a movie. The Forever3 track is done a long time ago. They were selected from about 5000 tracks, where only 10 where chosen. Well, I believe that the Forever3 track will manage to pass all the emotion that we want from this movie.
What part of making Forever3 is the most difficult and why?
For me it is the screenshot capturing! It is a hard, long and delicate process. Long because I work 14 hours per day, which consumes a lot of the time that I could be capturing/editing. Delicate because each captured scene I try to pass all emotions that I’m feeling at that moment. And for that to happen, some scenes get captured nearly dozens of times. That’s why I consider the capturing part the most dificult of them all.
Most of us know that Forever3 will have some surprises, will there be effects that have never been seen before in movies?
Yes, that’s true! And a lot of those suprises were only possible from the point where me and Tânia have started to make the path of Forever3. It is incredible how many of our ideas match. And when we started to write the script of Forever3, the ideas seem to come up from nowhere. And it is that feeling and emotion, that we feel for this game, that will make Forever3 show a lot of suprises and effects, never seen in gaming videos ;)
Are there any movies that inspire you to a new idea? And are there any movies where you see something new and think "I was going to use that!"?
I’ve watched dozens of Quake 3 Arena movies. And all, with no exception, are basis for inspiration to new ideas. Of course we have great classics such as: Annihilation, Tricking iT2, Get Quaked 3, Mercurial, Event Horizon² which are a candy treat to get inspiration for new ideas. Some movies have used some ideas or demos that I intended to use in Forever3, one of those demos is “rat vs vo0” in Mercurial (2m06 to 2m10). But that is a new lesson for us to get superior to ourselves with new inspiration so that we can go around that situation.
Will your son capture the sound again?
No, this time that won’t be possible due to some family measures that we had to take. The important thing is that Vecchi-Boy is ok, and still plays Quake3Arena.
There is a "gold edition" of Forever2. Why did you change the original, was there something you weren't happy about?
It's not exactly “not being happy with it”. It is more, to correct minor details that were bothering me. The problem is that I was anxious to release Forever2 and end up forgetting to review some stuff. But luckily I had all the source files which made it possible to do the corrections and release the Gold Edition. For Forever3 we will do all we can so that won't happen. Before launching the final version we will analyse it deeply and look for possible mistakes.
[PT] TANIA: Forever and Forever2 are both frag movies, why did you decide to include tricking?
r0x*Vecchi: Because who really loves this game, doesn’t just see it as a fight movie, but see it as a simply wonderful game, where the art of the trickers and runners fill the entire show. Quake III Arena, is, was and will be the biggest game of all time for me!
Will we see frags from you in Forever3? And from your son?
Yes, sure! Me and Vecchi-Boy are amateur players, but we’ve selected nice frags for Forever3. Our frags aren’t as awesome as those from many other players, but with no doubt they are real frags, made with care and relaxation.
You enjoy pretty much seeing demos, what were the best demos you saw?
Lately I haven’t had time to see demos. But whenever I can, I see some, to recharge the adrenaline that this game gives me. I have in my mind hundreds of great frags. I saw most of them in movies. For example, Mercurial has many dozens of amazing ones, here are some:
AUROR: 07:01 to 07:06 GRANGER: 07:08 to 07:13 SHAUN: 07:56 to 08:01 FHANTOM: 08:36 to 08:38
And what about a run/trick/capture?
Run: All runs that CeTuS used to do! But there is a strafe in the movie “The Truth” that i wont easly forget it: 07:53 to 9:33 :P Trick: The rockets from nihilanth and oTis in the movie “Live to Fly”. Especially nihilanth’s 13:14 to 13:51 Flag capture: What I like more are flag recoverings. But there is a very nice flag capture in Annihilation from usc-dynomite from 07:27 to 07:33.
What do the wallpapers that you released represent to you?
The most pure and true love that I feel for this game!
Is there anything that you want to leave stated for all Forever3 collaborators?
My sincere thank you, for being a great help on making another dream in my life, which is to present the Quake3 community with Forever3. Also I thank all the members from Forever3 Team, helpers and collaborators, who gave up their free time in order to create Forever3. I also appreciate you for giving me this opportunity and space for this interview. I also would like to thank the admins and members of own-age.com, who make this place one of the world references from quake3 with extreme professionalism. Also i can’t let out the people that always trusted and trust in our work. And finally I want to thank John Carmack and John Cash for creating this fantastic game.
Thank you all and see you soon!

Lovely, lovely. Who has been working over his English over the whole interview I wonder :D Anyway, nice to read, informable, I HUG TOO.
This raised my expectations on for3ver even higher, but I am confident they I won't be disappointed. Good that some tricking is in. The movie could not be dedicated to the love to q3 if there was not some of everything in. No need for q3rally "frags" or so though :D
Have a nice evening, good fight, good night.
