oTis: I'm here with jrb of shaolinproductions to talk about his latest sucess, Tricking iT2. Let's start with some basics, state your name, age and location please.
jrb: My name is robert paulson, my name is robert paulson... Actually, it's not. It's jethro brewin. I'm 29 years old, and i hail from the wonderous land of middle earth.. or the midlands, england, as it's commonly known.. 2 movie references for question 1, not bad!
oTis: How'd you get involved with Team infinite Trajectory in the first place?
jrb: Roffo from team iT happened across the 'never say never' rtcw trick movie i knocked up in a couple of weeks for 2 guys from the 4Kings RTCW squad. he ask me to make a quake3 movie purely off the back of that. At first i turned him and his team down, i forget why, but probably because of the amazingly high quality of tricking movies that were already out. Tribulation, Art of Tricking, CeTuS the movie, Tricking iT1, etc etc. They were all far above what we could dream of achieving in rtcw. Eventually i decided to have a look at what was possible with the defrag mod for quake3, and well, the rest is history.
oTis: How long did it take to make the video?
jrb: my first backup vegas file for the project is from october 2003. I know for a fact i haven't been working on the movie all that time, i had a couple of 2 months breaks, and most week days i didn't get any done with very slow progress on weekends. I guess a month or two of hard draft would best sum it up.
oTis: Were there any parts you really had to look back on and change?
jrb: iT were very strict with my first attempts at recamming demos, so it took me a while to get those right. I'm grateful for that actually, i told them to be harsh. I guess there were only two major changes; the intro, which initially had an infinite trajectory logo tracking and rotating with the scenary (it wasn't as impressive as it sounds), and roffo's sixxer (you've got to be f***ing kidding me!), which was initially the second demo in the movie. Other than that, as progress was slow, everything kind of just happened.
oTis: When did you come up with the idea to put in 5 audio tracks and how did you implement the idea?
jrb: To be honest, things i seem to do in movies are really things i never got to do in the movie before. In 4Kings Revolution i wanted to get WarWitch - the infamous team sportscast network shoutcaster to provide a second commentary track for the movie, something he agreed on right up until seeing the movie. So, the idea to do multiple audio tracks spans back over 12 months. 5 audio tracks for Tricking iT2 was just insane. I had planned to do 2 tracks, one with sound effects, one without. However i was bored one weekend, and just decided to remix the entire audio for the movie i'd done.. it was cool, but never used in the end, but the idea of multiple mixes all synched together stemmed from there.
oTis: Can you explain more about your audio selection and tell us why you have so many different parts of songs in each?
jrb: I used to be a dj, as well as a hobbyist musician many years ago.. i really like things that flow from one thing to another seamlessly. I approach video music the same way.. there shouldn't be pauses in the music just as there shouldn't be pauses in the action. Sometimes given any track it's impossible to just build up the audio and blend it into the next track without calling on other tracks to use. Remixes are good, or simply parts of other tracks to use as backing beats, etc. As for my music selection, I mainly pick songs that i like, and songs that have good opportunities for synching - interesting music, you could say. I'm not really a fan of the mainstream, the current fad of stuff like rock/punk/ska that we see in a lot of frag movies really doesn't interest me. A good example of how music gets into my movies is how shk, one of the guys from our irc channel challenged me to synch part of the 4k.revolution intro to gamma goblins a while back - he was going to use it in a movie of his own, but wasn't having much luck synching. I rose to his challenge, and decided back then it was some kick ass music to use, maybe not for that movie, but some time.
oTis: Did you struggle with anything during the making of the video?
jrb: There's always two things i struggle with.. the artistic aspect, and the technical aspect. I'd say the biggest problem area was defrag, it's great, i love what you can do with it, but getting there from scratch took me some time, and i was still learning cool camera techniques in the last week of editing. Defrag definately it has its flaws, but it's better for recamming than any other tool for other games that i've seen . I also struggled with what i wanted to achieve with this video, and how i wanted it to look. I didn't want to make the same "mistakes" i'd seen in other tricking movies.. Such as very rigid or inappropriate camera transitions , and over use effects where effects weren't needed. It took me a while to figure out how to achieve this, but i think it was time well spent, however these were sorted it was all pretty much plain sailing.
oTis: Why is there the whole part with "We Want Your Soul."
jrb: The real reason is i was bored with capturing tricks, and capturing more tricks, so i thought maybe the viewer would be bored of seeing them too. I'd seen the better unborn quake 3 jump/frag movie, which has a cool effect with the camera spinning round, but the maps changing.. i'd actually planned the exact same effect, so i thought i'd try to do a similar thing, but with something a little different which i don't think has been done before. I think it was iT-rate who asked me why i put it in there, he didn't get it. He thought i was trying to say something about frag movies, which i wasn't. It was interesting he thought that though. Of course, it fits nicely to the music too, which helps. :D
oTis: Was it important for you to change the speed of the video up constantly? If so, why?
jrb: I think it helps give the content more weighting if it's synched to music really well. The burley brawl part of matrix reloaded is a great example of how adjusting speed, and keeping it synched with the music works really well, and helps the viewer understand what is going on and have time to take the beauty of the action as well. Not that i'm comparing a trickjump movie with the matrix, but that's why i like to use speed changes with the music.
oTis: Do you have a favorite part in the movie?
jrb: I tend to like the parts I did more recently. With such a long project it's hard to stay excited about the parts of the movie i did at the beginning or a few months ago. Probably when i was doing it the parts i liked the best was belth's fx'd up trick on opc2, and the acquiring new trick section (even with the typo!). As the mixes came together right at the end i remember being totally stoked about how well that worked out.. especially as it was a great team effort from mrks and binarybiscuit at shaolinproductions.
oTis: Was maphive's final trick on cos1_beta7b chosen for it's amazing skill or because the ceiling closed after? Or maybe it was both?
jrb: the iT guys suggested i use that trick last in the movie. I think it's partly because of the great skill; probably one of the best demos in the movie (which is a little hard to see in the movie - sorry maphive), and the nice closing door part, which i think worked well with the camera panning back. Traditionally the last trick has always been the best trick in the movie..but there were a few here to choose from. That will always be a problem with such great content.
oTis: Are you at all suprised by the amount of feedback you've received so far from this vid?
jrb: in a word, yes. the shaolin guys were keeping me positive throughout the project, as i'm sure you're aware it's easy to lose sight of what you're doing, and why you're doing it when you spend so long on such a short piece of work. Hearing the feedback of people has been great, and i was particularly happy with the 'best trickjump video' and 'best editing' awards from own-age.com which has put me on equal footing with the excellent (and still unbeaten, in my eyes) 'art of tricking'
oTis: What's in the future for the main man from shaolinproductions?
jrb: well, i've had a couple of offers already from quake3 tricking clans. I'm still not settled on what i want to do next. We've been talking about doing a follow up to the 'tk another day' video we did for rtcw, but cover more games, and make it into a more machinima based production - maybe along the lines of the classic dank and scud quake(www.pk.edu.pl/~pmj/quakecomics/) comic.
oTis: Any final comments or shoutouts?
jrb: i think the greets section in the movie was pretty comprehensive, so i wont bother here incase i miss anyone out. Just a big warm thanks to the likes of own-age.com, pq3.net, esreality, and other great sites that have reported the release of the movie, or even hosted the file themselves. Without you shaolin productions and iT2 would be but a dream. 2004: year of the shaolin.

Good interview oTis :)) Agree about "Art of tricking". About the final trick on iT2... well it´s hard to see the difficult and the skill you need to do that one. Some highlights:
- The red glowing effect with the rockets on lzctf map (dont remember the tricker) - m1tsu plasma trick on csu1_a - We want your soul thing - The cam with Belth trick at opc2... that was pure art...
Just a personal note:
I think this vid doesnt fit the Q3 Tricking Vid pure class but instead it fits the Estetically Pure Art Vid because you not only watch tricks... or simply the content... but your mind and your eyes are blown away with the movie itself. That helps a lot to get the feeling, and the flow of the things.

Damn good vid!!!!!
But the music disappointed me, i dont like that u hear 2 songs at the same time. In my oppinion the music doesnt support the vid and destroys the smoothness and beauty. In tricking iT 1 the music let me fell in a dream by watching the vid. The precission and timing of the jumps were shown more clearly because of the perfectly set music.
Tricking iT best vid ever!! =)

try getting the music sorted, as it sounds like you're hearing all 5 audio tracks at the same time. look at the faq in the zip file for information on what to do. :)
