| How to Capture Quake 3 Game Audio
Tuesday, July 9th, 2002
By: own-age
Ok here it is, how to get sound from quake 3 arena.
As you know when you create avi videos from quake 3 arena you
don't get sound. So what you have to do is go back into the game and record
the sound using a recording program. I will try to guide you through on how
to do it.
Your first step is to get a sound record (capture) program.
I have used Ulead Mediastudio Audio Editor in the
past and it works quite well (but it will cost unless you get the free trial
demo) After you get your sound capture program installed you then next have
to change your windows sound recording setting set so that it records "what
you hear" so that when you launch quake you will be recording the game
sound and not whatever your record settings were at before (default is usually
the microphone)
To change this settings in Windows XP do the following:
| if you have the Volume control icon in your system's tray
(lower right corner near your time) double click on that and it should bring
up your play control. if you see this skip to the Gray bar below |
 |
if you don't have a yellow speaker there do the following:
Open up My Computer
Click on "Change a setting" on the system tasks to open the control
panal
Once you open up the control panel Click on "Sound Speech, and Audio Levels"
to open up the "Sound Speech, and Audio Levels"
Click on "Adjust the System Volume" which should open up the "sound
and Audio Devices Properties"
In this window click on the "Advanced..." button located on the Volume
Tab to open up your Play Control window
Now that you have the play control window open do the following:
Click on "options" then Properties to bring up the "Properties"
window
Click on the Recording Radio Button Located in the "Adjust Volume For"
Now this is where some systems have a little bit of change...
You should either have a "what U Hear" or "Master" Under
"show the following volume controls" Make sure Which ever one you
have is checkmarked and hit ok to bring up the "Record Control" Window
From the Record Control window Select "What U hear" or "Master"
whichever one you have and make sure the volume is up all the way or whatever
volume you want to record the sound effects at.
Once you are satisfied Close out of the window and launch your audio recording
program and start recording the audio and launch your q3 game.
Select your demos or do your thing and when your done. exit out of quake and
make sure you stop that Recording program otherwise the file might get a little
big :P
To sync them you have to have a video editing program like premiere and its
pretty much just trail and error to figure out where the sound goes in respect
to the video (use best judgement :P)

For you who don't have/use Live! / Audigy cards and have the option "what you hear" - I can recommend the program OPD2D which does the same thing: It records what you hear and saves it as wav.

hm bacchus... i installed advanced mp3 wma recorder.....
it doesnt record
the file (wma is 5 mg) but when i listen at winamp, its no sound, empty, quiet...
maybe i have to do some settings in xp?
in the windows audio control panel my settings are:
playback: volume control, sw-synthesizer, mono in , mikrofon, cd-audio, aux, line-in
no ticks are set there at no point (by "sound off")
when i go to: options, properties (there i can go to record)
record settings: stereomix, mikrofon, cd-audio, aux, line-in, wave
tick is at stereomix...
whats wrong??? f*** |

I don't know, because I used sound recorder, and that way I had no settings in xp to tweak. Just launched quake in windowed mode, and then sound recorder, asked to record (and then selecting the quake window, because when I didn't I had no sound playing at all), and that's all! It recorded what I was hearing.

Alcohol is the answer, but I can't remember the question!

A quick search in the forum would have given you a thread with this link: http://www.polderbits.com/download-sound-recorder-uk.htm
And no you don't need to configure anything, it just records "what you hear" with no additional settings to configure (be careful it is a 14 days trial so my advice is just to record them all at the same time in a row, took me like 30min-1hr to record 14 demos).
