A lot of people make videos and they don't know how to get the quality that people see in The Next Level or The badge series. Some people just use their regular q3 config and thats a big no no.
Just about everyone's gaming configs have been stripped down to display less eye candy which helps out on fps.. but when someone wants to watch a video they wanna see all eye candy + smooth textures.. so it is important that you make an alternative config with every setting set high. for an example of a video config goto http://www.own-age.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=7932&page=1 and check under the configs section for video editing config.
Another key feature which many people forget about is Your Antialiasing, it is very important that you use your video cards best settings, and to double check that your video card is set correctly you should go here:
under "Display Properties" Pop up box(right click and select properties on your desktop), you should click on the settings tab and select Advanced... now some drivers are different so you might have to poke around and look for Antialiasing or AA or FSAA, most cards support the following options: None, 2x and 4x. for highest avi quality, you should use 4x, and for fastest performance, you should use none. You might see a significate loss in framerate when switching from none to 4x, but your final avi quality will be much better and the viewers will thank you.
Now before you go about making your screenshots and making your avis, you should decide what the highest resolution you will want to make.. of course, the higher you use.. the more space the screenshots will take up as well as the final video will be larger. I personally use 800x600 which is excessive, and I would reccomend you stick with 640x480 and the reason for me rendering screenshots and videos in 800x600 is for dvd purposes. so I can put the finished product on a dvd and watch it on my tv. The average computer today can not play a 800x600 resolution video because its just too much data to be running through not to mention it expands the size of the video by 33%.
Once you figure out your resolution, stick with it.. and the same should follow with your config and the way you process all of your screenshots... if you are going to convert all the screenshots into avis before you create your final video (which is what I reccomend and is the least hard drive consuming) Use the same method throughout. and what you should do.. is create the highest quality avi that you can. (make sure its the same resolution size as your screenshots still otherwise you will get some ugly looking avis) Since these avi's are not the final avi you will need to retain the quality till you get to the final quality. Once you are rendering the final edited video.. you will then figure out what rate (kbps) you will use. Once you are satisfied with the avi as far as quality and clarity you can delete the screenshots and move on to the next batch.
These are just a few helpful tips to some of you new video makers out there, or even some somewhat experienced editors out there to get the best quality out of your video.
if anyone has something that I forgot or a question, feel free to post a comment

hrm... i think most variables would be alright... you'd have to try out a config and see what happens.. worse thing that could happen is your game locks up.. and you put your old config back up
