yea, 1024 would be bad for resizing down to 640x480... the proper size would be 2 times 640x480.. so 1280x960 would be best.
For my next video I am making the final video size at 720x480, so I will have to do a little cropping ontop of resizing. But the ideal size for me that I am resizing to is 800x600. So this example is comparison for 800x600 and 1600x1200, the results will be very similar when you compair 640x480 to 1280x960.
Here is 2 image examples of the difference between a regular image taken at 800x600 and a resized image from 1600x1200 (zoomed to 300%):
Notice the detail, and the edges between the two.
Below is The same 2 images, sept in 100% zoom
Main plus is your edges will be smoother. also, there will be a slight increase in depth and textures. also, colors will be more vivid.

you can also vary the resizing method if you're using something like virtual dub, or alter the render quality to alter the resize quality if you're resizing in vegas video. The addition of sharpening can also help, if done right. Again, images taken @ 1600x1200 with 4xAntiAliasing, and 8xAnisotropic filtering a = bicubic resampling b = lanzcos3 resampling c = sharpen + lanzcos3 resampling
a.
b.
c.
a.
b.
c.

Hmm, so one of the smart things is to creat the TGA's in 1600*1200? This is a problem for me since im using a 15" LCD, which doenst support any larger resolutions than 1024*768. I checked my NVIDIA Media center, and found anti-aliasing, but i could only set these settings: 1. Off 2. Quincux Antialiasing (tm) 3. 2x 4. 4x ,9x-tap (loss) gaussisk (guassian) 5. 4x 6. 4xS (Direct3d only)
Plus, i could set a option called "Enable Texture Sharpening" There was no 8x.
I have to create the TGA's with Anti Aliasing on, to get the effect?
(Meaning i have to do it all over again :))

yea, in order to get the benifits of these features.. you have to start from scratch.. which is why its important to figure this out before you start doing anything like I am now :P
With me.. i just set FSAA 4x and 8x for Anisotropic filtering.. From my undestanding the benifit of anisotropic filtering is the rendering of objects farther away and how it appears.. with it off.. objects father away become blended in.. where with it on it is more crisp.

The Naked Truth About Anisotropic Filtering
also, i'm not entirely sure about needing to resize in multiples (ie 1600x1200 -> 800x600). Lanzcos3 filtering gives pretty damn nice results even if you're going between odd resample sizes. (ie 1024x768 -> 720x576).
Not all cards support anisotropic filtering, but it should appear in your nvidia media center if your card does. Other than that option 5 in the list sounds good, and the same as what i'm using.
not sure what texture sharpening is compared to anisotropic filtering. i always have it turned on when capping movies, but i have a feeling it waits until textures are further away before starting the trilinear filtering, which can result in the texture flickering you often see in console games (they rarely use bi/trilinear filtering due to memory restrictions)

A sample video of 1600x1200 resized to 800x600 then cropped to 720x480. Using annihilation quantize settings and 2000kbps.

Photoshop Method:
photoshop action file here - right click and save as
go into actions click the arrow in the top right corner and it should bring down a list.. select load and select the file from the link above.
after you load. go under file/automate/ batch...
in play: under set: select the new action folder under action: select the new action
choose the source (your q3 screenshots folder with all the screenshots in it)
under destination, select save and close, and run the batch.

Creating an action in photoshop tutorial:
Create a new document (doesn't matter what size it is..but just to be on the safe side.. create it as the size of your original screenshot sizes.. say 1280x960)
You will need to show your action toolbar which can be done by going to: Window : Actions.
First lets get firmiliar with the action window:

ya, it that pic just about sums it up.. moving on ..
First, create a new set give it a name and hit 'ok'
next, Create a new action. Give this a name as well. then hit record.. Now before you go off and start trying to do stuff, remember that once you hit that record button photoshop is recording every action you complete. so if you edit your image.. and then do what you want it to do. it will repeat all the steps unless you edit it after stopping the action..
ok, now that you have photoshop recording your action go to: Image : Image size...
A new window should appear similar to this:

Here you set your image size and everything according to how you want it. If your final avi size is going to be 640x480.. set it as shown in the image above. Important: To get the best image quality Make sure Resample is selected and Make sure the resample listbox is set to "bicubic" as snowin in the image above.
after that, stop recording your action by red stop light looking button found in your actions toolbar. (the toolbar that looks like the first image)
and thats that for creating an action for resizing... the batch process will save and close if you have that setting enabled.

Ok, i've created my first "Action_resized_l337_avi_file" and i must say this is actually..fun :)
I got a zip containing my little work i did. No content, just the action image resizing. And config test, tell me if something should be fixed.

btw: own-age, i've commented your config over at www.quake3world.com/forums |

here's a virtual dub processing settings file... it contains a simple sharpen, then resize to PAL dvd, sets the output framerate, and compression codecs to use for output.
VirtualDub.audio.SetSource(0); VirtualDub.audio.SetMode(0); VirtualDub.audio.SetInterleave(1,500,1,0,0); VirtualDub.audio.SetClipMode(1,1); VirtualDub.audio.SetConversion(0,0,0,0,0); VirtualDub.audio.SetVolume(); VirtualDub.audio.SetCompression(); VirtualDub.video.SetDepth(24,24); VirtualDub.video.SetMode(3); VirtualDub.video.SetFrameRate(20000,1); VirtualDub.video.SetIVTC(0,0,-1,0); VirtualDub.video.SetRange(0,0); VirtualDub.video.SetCompression(0x67706a6d,0,10000,0); VirtualDub.video.SetCompData(24,"EwAAAAUAAAAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABAAAA"); VirtualDub.video.filters.Clear(); VirtualDub.video.filters.Add("sharpen"); VirtualDub.video.filters.instance[0].Config(48); VirtualDub.video.filters.Add("resize"); VirtualDub.video.filters.instance[1].Config(720,576,7); VirtualDub.subset.Delete(); | simply past it into notepad, save as 'q3.vcf', and then load into virtual dub. drag in the first image from your imageset, and save out as the desired avi. In this case you probably don't have the correct video codec.. not sure on the speed of photoshop, but with more filters in there including image correction, and convolution i got about 8-10fps during saving images out for the 4K movie.

yea, I'm not aware of how you can shrink avi's down using bicubic, but if virtual dub can do it, so be it.
How and why are you using so much fps?

because it seems to come out much smoother, and i have a 120gb hdd with q3/mods installed, so size is not an issue \o/
