In Depth look at AE's basics - 45 min long tutorial by Kindredreply | view profile | pm | quote
Hosted by BYGFORUM: The depth of basics
Size: 117 Mb
Length: 44:30 min
Theme: Basics and optimization
Goal: My approach is to give a relatively full understanding of what goes on, how to edit faster and better so that people can use these newly acquired tools to create a cool effect of their own; which would give a wider range of effects for us to see in the vids released. Instead of giving you a robotic tutorial for one effect, I give the tools to create many. At least the start of it :)

Topics covered:

-Creating a comp and its setting window components
-Folders
-Adding video layers
-Multiple compositions
-Magnification
-Resolution
-Quality
-Go To Time
-Zoom in Time
-The Work Area
-Safe Areas (more explanation in the read me file)
-Grids
-Ruler & guides
-Displaying time (SMPTE, Frames, Feet+Frames)
-Channels
-background color
-The Workspace customization
-User interface color
-3 modes of preview (forgot 1, explained in the read me file)

I would’ve liked to go even more in deep but I didn’t want to go too deep or else i would’ve required more time and subjects that are far from the basics.

Usually when I see a tutorial for basics, the editor always ends up skimming many subjects. Talks a little about creating a comp, making keyframes, etc. So the audience only gets bits and pieces without really knowing why things are happening. I’m hoping to do the opposite.  In a way, teach from the ground up by giving as much info as I can to instill a solid base for those in need and optimize efficiency for those who don't. It’s 44 min long, you are bound to learn things you didn’t know ;)

"This is very important: you must be give the correct names and be very organized with your folders.. "

...

"Let me give this comp a name: cpxearh"

LOL

I'm really liking this... i've followed other tutorials but i think this time i'll get it right ;)

Do a main thread that will be a sticky and in the first post, put the links to the others like spook said ;)

I will watch the whole movie this weekend (no time yet) and I don't even have AE but I just have to watch what happens next because of this little thing in the beginning:

"First let's give the comp a name, you know a useful name. Always give a very useful and meaning name so that you know what it is."

And then you go all

"jhsdjkch"

Awesome. Gimme more :D

lol yea I figured its 45 min long, might as well make it entertaining lol

I have another one that explains keyframes in depth. I posted it  here
http://www.own-age.com/forum/threads/49874

I'm currently working on an in depth look at 3D space of AE and this will introduce Cameras of AE as well.

Thanks for the sticky but since I'll have a lot more coming that touche advance users and Beginner users, I suggest you make a thread where links are to every thread I make. Unless you dont mind sticking all of them or unless you just want that one stickied. Its up to you. :)

thanks for the feedback :)

If there are more then let's say 5 (?) we could condense all your first posts into 1 thread, each post a new tutorial section. To unsticky/destickify is easy enough ;)

:) very nice.

So I got this first one. I am editing my movies in Vegas but might switch if this sounds good to me. Will watch it anyway and hope to learn anything for editing in general.
Thank you very much for this, probably lots of people will love it.

Have a nice day.
John

The reason why AE isnt done for putting a video together is because it works under a system of layers. Every clip would be a layer so imagine having 100+ layers. you'd have to scroll all the way down and up which is a big time waster. Even if you end up opting for that method, the second problem is that AE takes a lot of power from your computer and will take even more since you'll have so many layers. Vegas is better for putting it together and a comon mistake of many editors is that they go overboard with effects. The best effects are the ones who are seemless. For that matter, the best editing is the one that is the most seemless. (got a little carried away lol)
