So.. around 2004-2005ish I released version 9.. which would of been
very good for its intended release date of late 2003. Now, being close to
the end of 2008 the site definitely feels dated. I think a total
revamp is in order but to change the massive source code base that is
version 9 would be an ungodly amount of wasted effort. I will be
testing out some theories I have on a simple layout for the site that
should be easy to use from all aspects (web browsing and developing to
be specific)
One of the main reasons I haven't been around is because it has become too much of a hassle to publish changes to the site. I'm hoping that with the new version in the works I could get something going quickly and get a snowball effect with changes/feedback to produce it into something great quickly.. but we will see.
I think there are a lot of features on the site which are a nice to have but not really required. When I start working on a new version of the site I will be starting from the ground up producing features I feel are the most important to the site and build from there.
Some of the new features I'm thinking about including in v10:
- Tagging - The sole way of categorizing videos. The ability to search and sort off tagging I think is going to be huge.. and it allows an unlimited number of ways to categorize videos quickly.
- Streaming Support - From own-age.com and many other providers such as the newly designed own3d.at
- Better Listing of videos
- +/- For Mirrors - While we kinda have this.. be able to hide the mirrors which have a negative rating to get to the mirrors which have a better success rate.
- Easier Navigation
- Searching
more to come, any thoughts or ideas are greatly welcomed.

Hi :)
Tagging seems like a good thing to have, but although the description (hopefully) has some relevant tags, along with the current game categorisation, this will probably mean screening a lot of the movies to add useful tags. Perhaps the admins can lend a hand, or maybe there is some possibility of users to add tags to existing movie profiles? (There are some pitfalls here though)

add these:
1) feature to filter out movie categories (tags?) that aren't interesting to me
2) feature to highlight (or smth) the movies added after my last visit

Good to see you working again on a new version. I know it is something that will take a lot of time, so I hope you will keep your interet and lead it to an end. The ideas submitted sound good. I especially like the taging function and the idea of a partnership with own3D.at, especially if they can host movies for us too. I think of a revamping of the search function too, because I personnally don't like the currzent search function (results presentation is not clear). Anyway good luck!

Alcohol is the answer, but I can't remember the question!

It'd be great to have an rss feed, but when the site is revamped it may look so good i want to see the whole thing :p
A tutorial section would be quite good; right now any tutorials have to be accessed through the forum which for the new kids is a little cumbersome.
I like the idea of providing video streaming, sourceradio provides a decent service but their official reviews of movies are shocking, i think own-age provides a much more accurate way of rating movies. |

yeah; a link to the tutorial forum somewhere on the front page would probably be useful.
a feature which might be useful for users ( but mainly admins too ) is to be able to say display this week's released movies, sorted by number of replies or number of downloads (or even average number of downloads per day whichever), for the admin team this will make it easier to check out the popular movies which, apparently must be good/interesting at least and post news-items accordingly, while this might seem a bit skewed (giving the already popular more attention) it will encourage 'casual' visitors to take a look at the current 'big hits'.
I'm personally not a huge fan of streaming, but the demand seems high enough to warrant an implementation, if you do end up doing it; maybe a reviewed version of own-age.com TV might be nice (randomly queuing N videos from tags x,y and z for instance).

How about a submit article or news page for registered users ? Moderators could then look at content and spelling before publishing material (or eventually refusing it). Other ideas along those lines would allow you to get extra new content with little work (a la Web 2.0).
"Tagging - The sole way of

This is good. It'll avoid having tons of subcategories. You could just have a categorie per engine series (Quake, Unreal...) and let users tag a video to say what engine it's based on. You could have a list of standard tags in a pulldown menu (Q2, Q3A, UT, UT2004, fun video, clan movie, etc), a text box below for custom tags and a submit button.
Also, may I suggest the idea of channels ? Each user could choose the channels they are interested in and get content according to those choices.

"Some people like to bitch and whine. Me ? I just smile and say cheese :D ." * Clan Smiley iCTF movie by Ausbrecher * Running games at insanely high resolutions * The Clan Smiley Movie II (in progress) * Azazel's Movie Making Wiki (submit your own tips and info)

It would help to categorize more efficiently too, if posters play the game. Example: if I like Defrag promode movies in Q3A, atm I need to browse all the Q3 tricks movies to find them. If I think of a movie of that kind but can't remember the name, it will help me. Only problem will be with the current movies that have not been tagged... A script could probably a part of the job based on the description, but choosing the tags and the correspponding words would be a huge job. Btw there is already a "suggest news" function (the button is at the bottom of the main page), it just sends an email to the admin team. I have never received a mail that way, but the mail function was broken until lately, so I don't know if it wasn't used at all or if it just didn't work (probably never used, because I usually got a PM when someone tried to send me a mail).

Hopefully the tagging system won't be abused, then. an own3d co-operation would be cool. I like to stream a movie first, before I download it. |
