Definately Special effects. More precisely finding new effects. It is always a pain to find an effect that has not been done before and that could fit your movie. After that encoding would probably come first because it is very time consuming and you are a spectator while your computer is encoding the movie, when in other parts of video making you are more active. About finding a soundtrack, I always had some in mind before begining the movie. Synching goes pretty well with the right soundtrack and the right captured footage. Camming is fun, but it is difficult to find original camming ways. Extracting footage is boring and very time consuming, but quite easy.

Alcohol is the answer, but I can't remember the question!

yea, i think both special effects and ripping demos.. i hate doing that part.. then if you consider syncing music as effects.. then yea

I think Extracting Footage & Finding a new soundtrack, Extracting because it takes so damn long, and finding a new soundtrack because it's so hard to choose... Effects is a tough one as well, hard to be original these days...

I agree with Wussie, but i don't think finding a soundtrack is that hard, there are SOOOO many good songs out there that will fit a q3 frag vid, but most people just don't spend time researching and either pick out a song that has been used before (remixes included) or find a really crappy one which doesn't suit the "feel"/emotion of the vid.
On the other hand, i think mostly any song can work with a frag or trick vid as long as it's synched properly.
Simple special effects (like those used to synch) normally do not take up alot of time, you just have to be creative with them.
For me the most dreaded part of making a video now is making sure people like it. I'm a big people pleaser so i try to make something worthwhile and interesting. This all has to do with effects, soundrack, and footage. Making a project pretty and presentable is the hardest task of all imo.

Yeah frags as well especially when you already are making a movie (which is great fun) and realise you ain't got enough good frags. Happens when you watch certain frags 100 times and you realise the frag isn't as great as you thought it was. And then it's pain in the ass cause you got to collect new/better frags not for fun but as some kind of work. That sucks cause with such motivation you play worse.

I think soundtrack selection the hardest for me simply becuase its so hard to find someting that everyone will like. but i guess that isnt possible so finding the best comprimise is difficult. Especially for selecting music for my current vid XE

Other for me. The dreaded "oh noes the software is doing something comlpetely random why is that happening" errors that you get, and cause you to loose a heap of work. Its not so bad now, but back on Premiere 5 and earlier, these errors would simply destroy your soul...... "We want your SOUL!"

Omg it brings back so many (awful) memories... When I was working with Premiere, it often crashed. Sometimes it just simply refused to load project again, and then it was lost. At a moment I couldn't even save the project, and had to edit everything in a row (hopefully it was years ago and I didn't spend a lot of time on editing, just drag and drop + add music track). @Fei: strange, capturing ingame sound really didn't take long for me (like an hour for around 4min of ingame sound), but I agree that sync'ing it takes a little more (have to play with velocity enveloppe). @Hooker: just find tracks you like, because whatever song you will choose there will always be people who don't like it.

*shudder* Thats exactly what happened to me. Did about 4 days straight editing on a Quake movie (wayyy back in the day), woke up the next morning ready to put the final touches on it and BAM! Goodbye project. Nothing but black screens or maybe an empty timeline. Not to mention the lack of autosave and my own stupidity meaning the loss of an hour of progress everyother day of the week :(.
Ahhh memories *wipes away tear* (note: tear is not nostalgic... atleast in the goodway)

Definatly extracting footage.. i hate it ;) It takes a lot of time and its soooooooooo boring. I always stop after 3-4 hours of watching demos and capturing the footage, simply because i get bored and peeved ;)

Extracting footage is the worst thing of making a video. I totally agree with you psycho it needs so much time and I always rather wanna do something else after 2-3 hours ;) But fortunately I'm making a non-shooter movie at the moment ;p

Extracting footage and finding a new soundtrack. These are the most annoying things, becouse to extrack footage takes a lot of time and to find a good soundtrack takes a lot of patience. The most fun part for me is special effects and synching it...
Don't know why but I really enjoy those things, only they makes me happy when creating a movie :DD

I said other. Main reason is that I am extremely new to making movies, so pretty much everything is kinda intimidating. Plus, the game I'm starting with isn't exactly the easiest to do. Especially since it's console and doesn't have any of the goodies that lend a helping hand to video making. Hopefully this experience I'm gaining with Vegas 5, Premier 1.5 and After Effects will allow me to make some seriously "WOW" movies for Q4 for you guys.

| extracting footage. soundtrack is IMPORTANT and can be a pain to finally get your songs but listening to music isn't hard or take lots of time. extracting footage is why my vid isn't done yet. :-\ |

i don't dread any part of the movie making process (other than a b0rked harddrive) but i think the most time consuming part would be collecting/selecting footage
