I made that poll because it seems high resolution movies are becoming a standard, and 640x480 or 800x600 movies are becoming the exception, when they were the high quality versions a few months ago. I want to know what users think about it, if the "more" (resolution, framerate, etc) gives a better experience or is useless. And btw I thought I was an exception, but I can't read HQ movies, because I have a computer whose place is in a museum (Duron 1Ghz, 768Ram, Geforce2Pro, but I can play Q3 @125fps with decent quality with it), but it seems I am not the only one asking for LQ versions. So please people say what you think about it.

Alcohol is the answer, but I can't remember the question!

Yes i like High Quality. But not to much. 720p or things like that are okay. but i hate movies wich aren´t widescreen but still have black borders -.- but a fps-rate over 25 iss madness in my opinion. |

after seeing a few vids with 50 fps, i have to admit, those are much more fluent, but you notice that especially with nice flying 3rd person cams. the movie [gaq3]rocketarena is a good example of that.

overview of my movies, useful links, best quality settings for SoF2, handling (sof2) sounds before and in premiere
all on one site: www.sof2chicane.tk (the site is ugly but the info is gold)

High resolution/high fps movies look realy better but only if I can watch them smooth on my machine. For me the maximum with x264 codec is 800x600@30 fps, everything over this is "unwatchable" but with XviD I can even wath 1280x720@50 fps movies.
It's so sad when I know from the comments or from a friend that a movie is very good but there is only a highres version with x264 codec and I know that I couldn't wath it.
If someone takes the time to record and edit a movie for months than it's not a big deal to encode it with XviD or do a lowres version.

| hum i'm not sure that "highest quality" is a possible option, who can watch movie with that res ? 30° monitor :D, but if i could it's the one i choose ^^, cause actually i'm limited at 1024 600 40 fps in h264 but i don't have trouble with 720p in xvid 50 or 60 fps |

My old 20" CRT could do it (even higher, I think it cold reach 1900x1280 or something like that) before it died. Myt 19" is limited to 1280x1024, but now 20 anbd even 22" are quite affordable, so 1600x1200 is a possible option.

If my PC can run it, and it doesnt exceed 30-32 mb/min Im not picky.
I tend to make my own with: 960x600 x264 3500 bitrate 30 fps
Usually seems like good quality to me for about 25mb/min |

every keeps saying "madness" "too much" "why would you need that?" etc etc. Those sayings just mean you haven't been around long enough.
It's all about time and money. Before everyone was on 56K/ISDN, had 15 inch monitors, small HDs, 200MHz CPUs, no ram...etc. 320x240 15FPS mpeg-1 was the norm and 640x480 30fps was SUPER HIGH QUALITY.
Then it was xvid vs mpeg, "OMG why would you ever use that codec, its so slow and just not needed!"
Now its 720p and up + x264, once everyone upgrades their PC's those things will become normal and we will be looking at 4K releases for the high end :D
Frame rate is a different argument then res. res = more the better. but for FPS, after 23-ish FPS which
gives fluidity, its about: can you see a difference, and does it matter.

I would say, it depends on the game. Game as CS, don't need to be totally high, but for games as q3/COD2/BF2, I would say very high! :P

You are totally right! Except that imo the progression will slow down and stop at people's monitor resolution, maybe 1600x1200 in a few years, because what is the point in having more pixels than your computer can display? And you are forced to downscale the movie, which takes some CPU and lowers image quality). But I agree it is normal that standards keep increase. But the problem is that not everyone has upgraded its PC yet, so for many people like me there is often no way to watch a movie smoothly because the editor didn't provide a LQ version for them. Standards have very quickly increased in the past few months.
The poll was just a reminder for them, that everyone doesn't buy a brand new 3000€ computer every 6 months. Some people want best quality, some others (according to the vote it is 20% of the people, no editor wants to loose 20% of its potential audience for such a reason) just want something they can play smoothly.

Alcohol is the answer, but I can't remember the question!

How about more standardisation...
480p (medium - 854x480, not 720x480 - low end pc/quick download) 720p (high - decent pc/dont care too much about filesize) 1080p (insane - psycho fans only)
Hate seeing shit like 1280x1024 (annoying 5:4 lcd res) and weird in between stuff. Also when things are labelled MQ and HQ but dont say what res they are, a 720p suffix on the filename makes it simple. x264 as standard (anything >1ghz using CoreAVC should be able to play a 480p30 movie at full speed).
Most of the time 25/30 fps is enough. Higher can be good if the movie warrants it, but shouldn't be the norm.

I've noticed that now every movie has a hq version and it's a shame that I started my project as 720x400. So in this case I will be releasing only this kind of res for trickography.
In the future all moviemakers should start their projects with minimum 1280xXXX becouse now it is the standart for movies.
IMHO the 720xXXX or 800xXXX ir pretty enough for a gaming movie, but if you're not releasing higher version it makes you look bad :)

I completely agree with kam. As for the poll, I think that the first two choices are unreasonable (not counting fps). Sure, most monitors support them but has anyone (more than one pplz) done a movie at that res? If it was from a (potential) movie viewer standpoint, the choices should have been standard 1080p and 720p at diffrenet fps.
As for me, I can play pretty much everything both on my desktop (1680x1050) and laptop (1280x800). |

Bacchus you can upgrade your computer to c2d for few hundred euros. I did that 4 months ago, had p3 1ghz, and i can tell you it was well worth the investment. Sacrifice less to the guy in your avatar and have money to upgrade your computer ;)

Money is not th eproblem here, I have it, it isjust my wife who doesn't want to spend it in a new computer (I could buy a brand new computer for like 350 euros). And anyway it is just a pity to upgrade only to be able to watch gaming movies when it is the only thing I can't do correctly with my current computer.
