Live II Fly

First, a sincere thanks to those who helped realize our project!
Your efforts are greatly appreciated; this would not be what it has
become without you.

Let there be no doubt that the feel of this movie was inclined more
toward a showcasing of content than a cinematic experience. You are
encouraged to check out the included demos!

Quake III settings used were

VQ3 Physics (Quake III default)
/g_synchronousClients 1
/pmove_fixed 0
/sv_fps 125

with no deviation from the default timescale value (1.0) and no macros
other than the "industry standard" rocket jump bind:

/+moveup;+attack

This is the essence of pure freestyle trickjumping. It is the result
of tens of thousands of attempts, countless hours-long sessions, and
over four years of experience in the field.

There is no trickery nor confusion here; we do not feel the need to
play around with or mislead our viewers. It is with great distress
that I come to the realization that the place for pure freestyle is
subsiding in favor of methods such as timescale manipulation and the
use of complicated macros.

The possibilities are endless with the use of these elements and
exploration takes a whole new outlook, but I can't help but feel that
the passion being put forth isn't nearly what the purist perspective
yields. In this sense, the horizons are being broadened, but the
artform itself is consequently suffering. It doesn't help matters that
there are those out there who find personal gain in the deception of
others. Remember that what you see and what you hear is not always the
reality of things.

Finally, thank you for taking the time to download, and I hope you
enjoy(ed) the production!

—Rob

First off, enjoy the production. It's not exactly what I usually produce, but I guess you'll have to see for your self to find that out :)

Second... Mirrors
If you feel the uncontrollable urge to mirror Live II Fly, please do so! The movie comes in 3 flavors at this point, but we also have a "Ludicrous Quality" version available, if you think you'll be able to mirror this as well, please contact us at the stated IRC channels on enterthegame :) Thanks!
Big thanks and props go to noghost.net for providing the Ludicrous Quality mirror!

Audio Compression
The OQ, NQ and UQ versions use 256 kbit/s MP3 compression (straight out of vegas), the LQ version has 44,1 khz PCM Uncompressed audio. The original audio tracks were either high quality MP3 or FLAC, and the in-game audio has been captured at 125fps.

OMG I loved the first part. Downloading...

So first of all: Filefront suxx :D Needed an hour for 400mb. Hm downloaded the second higher version instead.
So to the movie: Nihilanth's rockets still rock and otis has his moemnts, too (like 7.55 for example). What I don't like is the fact that there are no transitions between each "chapter". But okay you wanted to let it end with the music. Well, music is another point. At the beginning I thought "wtf what's that for a slow music". But during the watch I liked it more and more. Especially the outro. After that I just thought "Wow" and watched the movie again with the second audiotrack. Editing... well I couldn't find a lot of effects but that is good. I like such videos which can impress me without them. But cause of the strange resolution (imo it is strange :D) there are way to big columns at the top and at the bottom. Cams are nice and sweet to watch.

So this movie is a keeper like the first part and finally there is a video out there with a xvid compression and a higher resolution than 800x600 (1280x534) which works without lagging on my machine. So thank you for that nice movie around 5 am =)

One more thing: I sometimes have the same prob like otis but with a microsoft mouse. I hate that when I screw up one trick cause of that...

I first gone mad when I first saw the 2 players featured in this movie. Then I looked up and saw who made it...I directly looked at the versions available and went for the normal qual, I hope it will be good enough for my eyes. -> nice stuff, great surprise at 5 am before going to sleep :X

I watched it 1,5 times because I was starting to fall asleep when I tried to watch it for a second times some minutes ago with the 2nd audio track.

So, at this point I've only seen the movie with the first track, and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with it. I had the impression that music was only here as a background, there was no "interaction" with the content. No synch on particular events, that wouldn't have been a problem if it had the same pace as the tricks shown, but it doesn't. In fact, there even are some moments were the music doesn't change at all, while there is a 50% slow motion on the video, it kinda broke the peacefull fealing here imo.

It's kinda obvious wus focused on the quality, and on finding the best way to show these great tricks performed by oTis and Nihilanth - god I love this nickname-, he succeeded well if you ask me. Some people might whine about the use of xvid instead of x264 which would have resulted on a much smaller file, but the Normal Quality version should satisfy all the non-fanatics who have some rather good computers like me.

Talking about the content, even if I don't know much about tricking in q3, I watched a lot of trick movies and it appears that the tricks performed here seemed brand new to me, and even better : they looked awesome :D

Outro is reaaaaally good, some text movements could have been better maybe, but I guess I'm the only one who's gonna talk about it so it's no big deal. The bloopers were fun :>

sorry for the bad english I haven't slept for 30 hours or something...

The tricks were great, the movie wasn't. It has given the same feeling like watching demos with too tardy/majestic music on winamp - imho doesn't fit the content at all. Only kept awake the jumps for first watch, so I don't see the point of two audio tracks.
The demos themselves wouldn't have given less feeling, so roughly I think that producing this movie was a waste of time. Good job for oTis and Rob. 6/10

I downloaded Otee version (lowest quality available), and the quality was great, and the movie could run smoothly on my old computer.
Finally something fresh, tricking wise. Of course Nihilanth shew us again some 12645 rocket tricks, but there were not too many so it remained enjoyable to watch (some movies are onlmy made of that kind of tricks and in the end you don't enjoy them anymore).

Editing stayed focused on the tricks, and there were no complicated recams that hide the tricks. But as I read sometimes it was just like watching demos (with high quality) with winamp in the background, so editing was kept too simple imo.
Anyway great job in the end, a favourite for me!

Alcohol is the answer, but I can't remember the question!

nice stuff.

The whole mood of the movie is great! It's a shame you didn't put more effort to the editing. Anyway, well worth to download.

Any reviews about the editing ?
What do you mean by "There is no trickery nor confusion here; we do not feel the need to play around with or mislead our viewers." ?
Do you mean that for once, you finally decided to show us the content without trying to hide mistakes ? No accelerations/decelerations/blur/flash hits/ to hide the lack of rockets synchronisation ? No "backward" cams ? How many first person view ?

Anyway, before watching it I can notice that this is "only" a 30 fps movie. Let's see if it really isn't "confusing".

This was a totally terrific movie ! For sure the best I've seen this year, considering the tricks, the music, the editing, the quality...
Okay, the music was not my taste, but I felt it perfectly suited throughout the whole movie. so music : 8/10
The content.. man, Nihilanth's tricks were totally awesome with all those multiple rj's, I can see the amount of time some of the tricks might have taken.. Nihi - rob - ya be crazy ! As for Otis, the damn trick on thephortress (iirc, dont blame me if i scorched the name of the map) was unbelievable. Long, perfect with so many chances to fail the tricks. You must have spent a ton of hours on those aswell. so content : 10/10
The quality : nothing much to say, everything was perfect. 10/10
The editing : Game sounds, poor editing so that we can see how amazing the tricks are, the music synch... 10/10
So my overall score is erm 9.5/10, close to perfection

And I particularly liked the outro, with that failed trick of nihi (which was damn close to the landing point :/) and the haha-walk in the tele
Great, great job guys, thanks for having spent so much time doing that, I'll definitely keep the movie.

first off this video was solely a showcase of our content. there was no attempt at synching the audio with the visual because to do that we would need to stay consistent with it throughout the whole movie. for this we would of needed to of slowed down/sped up content which for us, was an unecessary part of our goal for this movie. every trick was shown either in timescale 1, timescale 0.5 or timescale 0.3. with NO changes in timescale during the trick. changing these values (especially during the trick) leads to a lack of appreciation for the sudden acceleration/deceleration during the tricks.

this video certainly isn't made for the editing gurus. there are no effects to catch your eye, as they would instantly distract from the content. everything in this movie revolved around the content, and that's another reason why there's a third audio track just for in-game audio. to me, this video was made for any purists of freestyle content. but i do hope others can enjoy it for what it is. do not rip on wus for lack of editing/synching/effects because we didn't let him put in any lol. this was a full 3 man project, with everybody being extremely involved in the planning and execution.

as for rob's comment about misleading viewers, it's all about the original content. there' s a lot of scripting/timescale manipulation involved in freestyle these days and it's often hiden from the public. we don't need to do that to our viewers, for us its all about doing it the way it was supposed to be done and doing it at an extremely high level.

The part which said " industry standard rj bind" ruined it for me.  Well at least you said it but that script is in no way the "industry" standard. Otherwise a good content-driven movie with great quality.

The best tricking movie ever made for sure.
This is how a movie with such a content should be edited - at least it should be a standard.

Quality: 9.5/10
I downloaded the UQ movie. The quality is almost perfect for a decent size (950MB) and a 15 minutes movie. More FPS could help, but you don't really need it to enjoy the content.

Editing: 8/10
It's clean and smooth. Nothing is here to hide mistakes, the editor is honest with you. There are some replays and some scenes in slow motion ; they are well chosen but I personally think that some replays are still missing. For example, a first person view after the third one at 5:57 would be a good choice.
The songs (audio track 1) are relaxing and smooth but the start is "abrupt". Then, it's nice and fit well with the screen.
Still, adding a crosshair is a necessity (i.e. second trick, 4:35). It helps to understand where are going the rockets, and it also permits the viewer to fully understand how hard it is to perform such tricks.
Also, the screen is a bit small.
The credits scene is well edited.

Creativity: 9/10
A lot of overbounce(s) and one ammo plasma tricks.

Content: 9.5/10
You don't have the time to be impressed by a trick that the next one is already here. Everything seems smooth and perfectly controlled, I even forgot that freestyle requires a lot of luck, without - of course - forgetting how the pre-required skills to perform these tricks are hard to control.
The tricks are, at least, as impressive as the time oTis and Nihilanth passed to perform them.

So, if you don't know what to do for these two coming hours (yeah, the FTPs are quite slow), download the movie and enjoy, please for once, the content.

thanks biggy. comments are welcomed and appreciated of course. should post that in the reviews! nobody uses the review :p.

about the replays, only 4 were used for a reason. we had a chaptered system so as to keep things organized and less random with replays. 4 replays were chosen and ended chapters 1-3/5. 2 from each of us as we considered our best 'finisher' worthy content. with rob's 17++ being the best trick in the movie (as we think) and also the best for finisher 'wow' quality. too many replays would of killed the simple sensation of trick after trick.

fantastic rockets by nihi and the runs by otis really show off some excellent skill. the 2 styles support each other and the different maps (besides the dm17 style maps) and the occasional team tricks made the content of the movie just awesome.

quality wise the movie is top notch, audio is pretty chilled, and nice IMO (track 1 is all i heard so far)

intro and credits are really nice, what wussie could do (*was allowed to mess with) was well done. I liked the movie more then i thought i would, with the lack of editing and sync in the main section of the movie, the quality (sharp and no motion blur) and the fantastic skill displayed, really made the vid interesting.

I like this movie alot. Nothing much to say. I have just one point to criticize here, and thats the fact that i always see the same maps ever and ever again. Arent there any new potential maps to show us your great rocket skills? I mean it is great, no question, but it looks always the same, when i see your 500000 rockets flying through 17+, somethingelse or cos. Thats a little bit sad in my opinion. But anyway great great movie. :) 9/10 BTW Im in Love with Otis Trick at "7:50" <3, maybe not the best one, but so well done :D
